Power cable replaced after Poughkeepsie High outage

A power outage that forced the closure of Poughkeepsie High School for two days was caused by a short circuit in an underground feeder cable that serves the high school, according to utility officials.

The high school closed Wednesday morning and reopened Friday.

In that time, crews from Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. physically removed and replaced the cable, according to Central Hudson spokesman John Maserjian.

"These feeder cables are bundled electrical lines, and must be carefully spliced in multiple locations when replaced or repaired, a time-consuming process," he said.

Locating and repairing problems in underground cables and lines often takes much longer than repairing overhead lines, Maserjian said, and underground lines can be affected by water, moisture, urban runoff, frost heaves and other conditions.

The same power interruption closed the middle school Wednesday, but for a different reason. The short circuit in the high school's cable caused a protective device to interrupt power serving both schools, similar to a circuit breaker in a home.

The outage at both schools was reported at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday. Power to the middle school was restored Wednesday evening.

Power was restored to the high school and final testing was completed by 1 a.m. Friday.
